“Your First Therapy Session: A Guide to Getting Started”
Taking the step to begin therapy is an act of courage. Whether you’ve been considering counseling for a while or just recently decided to reach out, it’s natural to feel a mix of curiosity, hope, and even a little nervousness. At Greenwood Mental Health Counseling, our goal is to make that first session feel safe, supportive, and centered around you.
Creating a Safe, Judgment-Free Space
Your first session is about more than just paperwork—it’s about connection. From the moment you enter our virtual office, you can expect a welcoming environment where your voice matters. Therapy is a judgment-free space, and you remain the expert of your own life. Our role is to listen, understand, and help you explore what matters most to you.
Setting the Foundation
During your first session, your counselor will invite you to share a bit about yourself and what led you to seek therapy. We’ll talk through:
- What brings you in at this moment in your life
- Any personal goals or changes you hope to make
- How therapy has (or hasn’t) fit into your life before
- What you’d like your journey with Greenwood to look like
This is also the time to ask questions—about your counselor’s style, different therapeutic approaches, or the process itself.
Collaborative Goal-Setting
Together, you and your counselor will begin shaping treatment goals. These aren’t rigid checklists—they’re living, evolving intentions that give direction to your therapy journey. Whether it’s learning new coping skills, reducing anxiety, navigating life transitions, or gaining clarity in relationships, the goals we set are uniquely yours.
What Therapy Looks Like at Greenwood
Our therapists use an integrative approach, drawing from methods such as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, family systems approaches, and a humanistic lens that emphasizes empathy and authenticity. This means your sessions will be tailored to your needs—not a one-size-fits-all model.
Taking Care of Practical Details
To make your first visit as smooth as possible:
- Complete your intake forms within 12 hours of booking (this helps us get to know you and keeps your appointment secure).
- Check your email for a secure link to our HIPAA-compliant portal, where you’ll access your counselor’s virtual office.
- If you can’t complete the consent forms in time on Zocdoc or other booking platforms, cancel and rebook before the 24-hour window of your booking to avoid financial impact on yourself or the company.
These small steps ensure your session can be fully dedicated to you and your goals.
Moving Forward
By the end of your first session, you should feel heard, supported, and equipped with a clearer sense of direction. Therapy is a process, and each step builds on the last. At Greenwood Mental Health Counseling, we’re here to walk alongside you as you explore challenges, build resilience, and move toward meaningful change.
